There is a significant disparity between the most successful and least successful markets for open banking and, consequently, the associated API market. European markets, including the UK, as well as the likes of Brazil and India have long-developed open banking systems which have been backed on a federal level, resulting in significant adoption of open banking solutions from businesses and consumers. For example, open banking in Brazil and India has flourished as a way to enable digital payments as they become more accessible for consumers. In Europe, use cases have broadened from core banking offerings to loans offerings such as mortgages, in addition to standard credit, subscription consolidations, investments, and more. On the other hand, even developed economies such as China and the US, which have the potential to excel in the market, are trailing behind due to an unpolished or incomplete regulatory landscape. Without federal backing to foster market growth, a purely market-driven approach results in a fractured offering, antithetical to open banking as a concept. Additionally, many will not consider open banking in any capacity until security standards are ratified to ensure consumer protections are in order, especially concerning valuable data.
