IPX services a critical component of global telecommunications infrastructure; functioning as the backbone for roaming and interconnection. An evolution from General Packet Radio Service Exchange (GRX), IPX enables the interconnection of IP-based services between telecommunications networks worldwide. It supports data roaming from XG to XG SA, Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), and international messaging via private peering.

Juniper Research observes that the mobile roaming ecosystem is becoming increasingly complex; with mobile network operators and connectivity providers now needing to deliver roaming connectivity for diverse Internet of Things (IoT) roaming use cases as well as traditional roamers. Furthermore, the introduction of XG SA roaming over the next few years will place additional pressure on IPX providers to adapt their IPX services to the next generation of mobile roaming connectivity. These changes are pushing IPX providers to invest in technologies such as Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), local and regional breakout, and roaming analytics.
